Whether standing in the middle of a vast volcanic crater in Ardnamurchan; scrambling in Ledmore over 435 million year old marble or catching your breath at the basalt columns of Staffa – geology can change the way you think. As Hutton said, ‘the present is the key to the past’. Witnessing the ancient geology of Scotland made the artist Ilana Halperin want to learn more about how these remarkable sites formed. As Scotland is home to some of the oldest rocks on earth, she began to search for the youngest – in Iceland, France and soon Japan, to see and work with the processes that have formed the ancient rocks she now calls home. In Learning to Read Rocks, Ilana will embark on a rock hunt of sorts – from a world renown granite quarry in Fionnphort and a rumoured pier on Manhattan Island, to a stretch of melted rocks in Iona and a geothermal pool called Bloody Pond Hell. Old and young rocks will meet.
Felt Events
Artist Ilana Halperin invites a small audience on an evening journey to the Isle of Staffa where she will deliver a new, intimate spoken-word performance at the mouth of Fingal’s Cave. Halperin’s title, “Felt Events”, refers both to the term seismologists use to describe earthquakes and to an early body of work she made in 1998 shortly after moving to Scotland from New York. Standing amongst the resounding columnar basalt, Halperin will draw together geological and daily events in what promises to be a singular experience on this island wonder of the world. Working with Sea Life Surveys boat trips, Comar brings you this unique opportunity to visit the Isle of Staffa for this one-off event. The boat departs Tobermory Pontoon, Ledaig, at 2pm, for a performance at 5pm on Staffa, returning around 10pm. Limited spaces available, so book early!
